Italy to hold the acting Presidency of the EU on behalf of Spain
On January 1st 2010 Italy takes over the Presidency of the European Union on behalf of Spain in Zambia. Italy is to hold the acting Presidency until the External Service of the European Union is in place, reportedly after the end of March 2010. Zambia is one of three African countries where in charge of the Presidency is a third Country, all the others being in the care of either Spain or of the resident EU Delegations. The present development is the result of a provisional regime arising from early application of the new rules contained in the Treaty of Lisbon, that entered into force on December 1st 2009. Once the provisional regime is abolished external representation of the EU will be assumed by EU Delegations and rotation among member States of the Union will come to an end.Further news concerning the Italian acting Presidency will be reported on this web page.
