Macro-economic context

Zambia has been highly affected from the 2008 international crisis, however, thanks to the assistance of Donor Countries and the rise of copper’s price, which represents over three quarters of the Zambian exports, in 2009 the economy has significantly improved together with a hefty re-evaluation of the local currency.  Despite the recovery of the traditional mining sector, the rest of the economy remains underdeveloped.  For years there have been discussions about diversification, specially counting on the great potential of the agriculture and tourism sectors.  A complicated financial system together with a typically unconventional way of doing business, have up to now discouraged smaller companies, whilst there seems to be more opportunities for medium and large size companies. To start an activity in Zambia financial means and experience are required but the perspective of profit, once the initial difficulties have been overcome, is promising.  In this light the Embassy promotes initiatives with possible local partners and with financial institutions.
